The School

Liz DimmelDramatic Truth School of the Arts is a Christ Centered, professional performing arts school, which develops in each of its dancers the unique combination of excellent classical and modern technique with a heart of worship.

History

Dramatic Truth School of the Arts was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1986…

…when former Independence, Missouri residents, Doug and Liz Dimmel, felt a calling from God to provide training and guidance to young people interested in the arts.

Liz was challenged to combine her classical ballet training with spiritual themes and began a dance ministry in their church. Her students began performing for inter-denominational events and were quickly recognized for their beautiful technical ability combined with their deep passion for the Lord.

After Doug concluded a two-year tour as Barbara Mandrell’s drummer in 1991, the couple and their two children returned to their childhood home of Kansas City to care for Liz’s dying mother. They brought the dream of Dramatic Truth School of the Arts with them and began operating DTSA in Kansas City.

Dramatic Truth began to receive national attention after Liz danced with the Young Messiah Tour in 1992 and 1993. She and her students were noticed for their unique combination of artistry and passion.

In March of 2000 Dramatic Truth became a not-for-profit corporation. The school continued to grow dramatically as numerous parents and members of the community came together to form an official governing board nurturing the vision of  communicating the Word of God with integrity through dance.

At Dramatic Truth we feel it is imperative that students have the opportunity to explore principal and soloist roles from the major full-length ballets in a nurturing, encouraging environment. Preparing for, mastering and performing such roles develops valuable life skills such as perseverance, discipline and striving for excellence; skills also critical for anyone wishing to dance professionally.

Every winter we present an exciting full-length Christian re-write of the Nutcracker, allowing students to audition for a variety of technically challenging roles. They also have the opportunity to audition for the other full-length ballets the company performs; such as The Masquerade (a Christian re-write of the Sleeping Beauty), and Dethroning the Prince (an original ballet unveiling the spiritual realm of our decision making). Such ballets have a profound impact on the dancers and audiences alike.

Every spring we also present ballets such as Paquita, or excerpts from other major ballets like Cinderella, Swan Lake and more at our annual spring concert.

The major companies of today, however, require the ability to adapt to challenging contemporary choreography as well as perform pristine classical work.  Therefore we provide quality Graham and Horton based training alongside our vigorous Vagonova syllabus.

From prayer before class to reverence at its conclusion, the joy and passion of the dancers’ faith comes alive through dance.  This extraordinary inspirational phenomenon can be experienced every spring, as fine-tuned technique and hearts of worship become one in Act II of our annual spring concert. But Mrs. Dimmel’s greatest pleasure in life is not only launching technically strong dancers into the world, but having been a part of developing well-grounded young men and women of God who can truly make a make a difference in that world.

Dramatic Truth desires to be a tool used by God to recapture and restore the art of dance for His glory. As the author of creativity, Jesus Christ deserves to receive all the glory arising from every creative medium on the earth.
